CA members pay $5 a year to join the club and $3 per game to play. Meetings: All games are played in the Horizon Room with the exception of the 0-20 and 0-99 pt games on Saturday. The Fort Walton Beach Duplicate Bridge Club and Unit 219 ended 2013 with a sad farewell to Dora Ellen Anderson. This great lady of bridge died on Christmas Eve, one day before her favorite day. Dora Ellen lived to be 83 and started her young life in Booneville, MS where, as an only child, began playing bridge at age 9 when her parents taught her the game.
She graduated from the University of Mississippi with degrees in English and Math and in 1951 married David Shepard Smith, Sr. They lived in Holly Springs, MS where they raised two boys, Shepard and Benton. While in her late 20’s, she outlined Goren’s big book and passed it around to her friends in Holly Springs, MS and began playing an occasional game of duplicate in nearby Memphis, TN. In 1983 Dora Ellen moved to Fort Walton Beach (FWB) and worked as a comptroller for ERA American Realty. She met Lee Anderson at the FWB Bridge Club and developed an enduring bridge partnership that evolved into a life partnership when they married in August of 1990. Their partnership remained strong and competitive and together they won over 5000 points. the southern ethnic heritage is diverse and includes strong european ( mostly english, scotch-irish, scottish, irish, and french ), african, and some native american components.Ī highlight of their shared bridge experiences occurred at a Birmingham Regional where they won four events. the region is known for its culture and history, having developed its own customs, musical styles, and cuisines, which have distinguished it in some ways from the rest of the united states. the deep south lies entirely within the southeastern corner. its divisions are the south atlantic ( delaware, florida, georgia, maryland, north carolina, south carolina, virginia, and west virginia ), east south central ( alabama, kentucky, mississippi, and tennessee ), and west south central ( arkansas, louisiana, oklahoma, and texas ). the south does not precisely coincide with the geographic south of the united states but is commonly defined as including the states that fought for the confederate states of america in the american civil war.
